Made it to my dream destination Norway! And this Norway trip is extra special because I’m also taking my parents with me :) In this vlog, we land in Bergen and do a day trip from there covering some of the best Norwegian sceneries from lakes, mountains, gorges, and fjords, to waterfalls! We took the Flamsbana train ride which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world (it even stops on the way at these beautiful waterfalls), did a cruise through the Norwegian fjords, saw countless waterfalls, and amazing views along the way on our road trip. We drove from Bergen to Voss, took a train from Voss to Myrdal, and then the Flamsbana train from Myrdal to Flåm, which is where we did the boat tour in the fjords, took the boat up to Gudvangen and visited a viewpoint and Tvindefossen waterfalls. It’s no secret why Norway is such a top travel destination, but being there in person is makes you feel captivated by its beauty and complexity. We felt awe-struck around every corner and couldn’t believe how many fjords, waterfalls, and mountain there are to explore. Hey everyone! Welcome to our channel. Today, we are going to discuss “10 Dark Sides of Living in Norway”. We will walk you through the dark sides of living in this amazing country and help you decide if it’s the right place for you. From high costs of living and inconsistent weather to social conventions of limited interaction with strangers – let's dive into some dark sides that often get lost when considering life in Norway. Stay tuned to find out more! 1. You will never be Norwegian If you’ve ever been brave enough to visit Norway as a non-Norwegian, chances are that you’ve encountered the infamous “Viking Stare.” You know the one – it’s like the Norwegians have judged your worthiness simply from looking at you. The food here is also something that us non-Norse folks struggle with. If your idea of comfort food is anything other than boiled cod or reindeer stew (aka lutefisk), then I hate to say it, but Norway may not be for you! Not only is this cuisine notably unappetising (to some) there's really no way around it either - but everyone also seems to eat "traditional" Norwegian dishes every single day - so don't expect any variety on the dinner table anytime soon. On top of all these small annoyances however there is perhaps nothing more trying than learning how to speak Norwegian – an incredibly hard language even for those steeped in its culture. It is certainly one of the negative sides of moving to Norway. 2. Darkness There are some dark sides of living in Norway that you might not be aware of. Take darkness for instance. With its northerly location, Norway experiences genuine polar night from late November to mid-January in some parts – that’s a whopping 8 weeks without seeing any daylight at all! And if you thought those midnight suns were magical during the summer months, this kind of darkness could certainly feel like an interminable gloom settling over you. Just imagine 90 days with no natural light, try not to think about it too much or take on a gothic aesthetic - ‘tis best just brace yourself for it and accept your fate until February arrives! The city of Bergen is located along the southwestern coast of Norway. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, it’s a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. But as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen also combines history, culture, and an interesting urban life. This charming city might have a small-town feel, but it has tons of entertaining activities to offer. In this video, we break down our 6 favorite things to do in and around Bergen. 😴 WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN: - Barfot Apartments (budget option with kitchen in center of town): 🤍 6. Try the local food Norwegian culture is highly influenced by fishing and this is also visible in their cuisine. Visit Bergen’s fish market at the waterfront and you’ll see merchants selling their fresh catch of the day as they have for centuries. Other dishes Norwegians are proud of is “boller” (sweet buns) and “Pølse” (Norwegian hot dogs). 5. Visit a museum on a rainy day Bergen has many interesting museums that you can visit, such as the Norway Fisheries Museum, the Lepra museum, and the Bergen University Museum of Natural History. ☑️ List of more museums: 🤍 4. Day hike to highest peak in Bergen municipality Sitting between various mountains, Bergen naturally has plenty of great hiking terrain. At 987 meters tall, Gullfjellet is the highest peak in Bergen municipality and a classic for local hikers. Located a bit outside the city, this trail feels truly remote and is a great escape. The trail starts at Osavatnet and runs past a cabin (Redningshytten) on the way to the summit. To get to the trailhead, it’s best to rent a car or combine public transportation with a taxi ride. 3. Bryggen & the Hanseatic Museum Bryggen is one of Bergen's most iconic and popular attractions. With its vibrant atmosphere, you will find plenty of things to do. You can stroll through the narrow, crooked alleyways, grab a local beer at one of the many cafés, and learn about its historic importance at the Hanseatic Museum. A free guided tour is included when visiting the museum, during which you get to know more about the Hanseatic merchants and their daily life at Bryggen. ☑️ Book your visit: 🤍 2. Hike one of the 7 peaks Bergen is surrounded by seven peaks, and you can hike them all! The most popular ones are Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, which are easily accessible by foot or bus from the city center. Both are short but steep hikes of a few kilometers each, offering spectacular views of the city, the fjord, and the ocean from the top. There is a cable car to Ulriken and a railway to Fløyen if you don't want to hike. 1. Fjord Cruise Norway is known for its fjords, and so is Bergen. If this is your first time in Norway, make sure to go on a day tour of the fjords. Bergen offers a wide variety of guided tours, with Mostraumen being the most popular and accessible one. During a 3 hour cruise, you will see the varied western Norway fjord landscapes, consisting of steep cliffs and waterfalls. And you’ll have to change your attitude I’m afraid. As the weather in Norway might change 10 times a day - especially autumn and spring time. And it’s gona be much shorter days winter time. 📍4 - You don’t like outdoor activities. In Norway people spend their time outdoors all year around. Summer is ideal for hiking, winter is perfect for skiing and snowboarding. The house is just a hub to pack your lunch and discuss your future outdoor adventures. 📍5 - You will have to work hard. Much harder than you worked in your country of origin. If in your own country you are native, in any new country you will be a guest for a long time. And you will need to invest into society first to be accepted there and win your own place there 📍 6 - You will miss your local food and ingredients In Norway you will have to learn how to cook from local ingredients. Norwegian ingredients are not bad at all! Check local supermarkets in Norway and find exactly what you like 📍 7 - You will not party as you used to in Norway I repeat it’s not a party culture! Party in Norway is happening different way - every Saturday or Sunday if you go hiking you’ll meet a lot of people doing the same. That’s where Norwegian party and social life happening - outdoors! Also we are having dinners with friends here. But that dinner will be with much less alcohol compare to some other European countries and most probably by 10pm everyone will go back home. 📍8 - You are smoking It’s bad anywhere in the world but in Norway it’s also insanely expensive. Let’s have a look at maths: 1 pack of Marlboro red is NOK = US Dollars If you smoke even a half pack a day, 1 year of smoking in Norway will cost you about €2 555 📍9 - You will miss your family and friends That’s 100% and you cannot do much about it. But remember, this is your choice to change the country so you are the only to be responsible for your decision. Advice here: regular visits - both sides combined with modern technology- face time, teams. I know it’s not the same but it’s a part of the process and you have to be prepared for it. 📍10 - If you like complaining to strangers- especially on the bus, if you like judging people and always know best how they should behave and what they should wear, if you can’t deal with your curiosity and keep asking everyone around why they don’t have kids yet or when they are planning to get married and it seems it too late anyway - you better don’t come to Norway. 📍 11 - You will never be Norwegian. Let me put it this way: you will never adjust yourself 100%. You’ll always have an accent - if you are moving the countries at the age of 20 and above - 99% you’ll have an accent. I went to Norway at the end of spring 2017. It's a pity that I didn't have enough time to explore all the beautiful scenery here. but I have filmed the best scenes in Oslo and the houses in the fishing village of Lofoten, hope you like it.
