WLS AM 890 radio celebrates its 25th anniversary of playing rock and roll with this retrospective TV show that aired on Channel 7 WLS TV Chicago in 1985. Most of the disc jockeys of the past (and some of the present at the time) appear on this program. The program is hosted by the late super jock Larry Lujack.
Just a quick sampling of a few of my favorite WLS jingles from the early '60s/late '50s. WLS began using PAMS of Dallas to produce their jingles in the early 1960s. But these jingles in this montage are a product from just before that time, when WLS jingles were sung by the Anita Kerr Singers. I must say, as radio jingles go, I've always believed that nobody has ever matched the quality of the Johnny Mann Singers during the Drake era (KHJ/Los Angeles, KFRC/San Francisco, WRKO/Boston, etc.). But I'd honestly forgotten just how good these Anita Kerr Singers jingles on WLS were. They're clearly from an earlier time in top 40 radio, so the style is decidedly more square. But the vocals are incredible. Almost as good as the Drake Johnny Manns. Almost. These are just a few of my favorite Anita Kerr Singers jingles done for WLS. Growing up in the midwest (in Kansas City) in the '50s and '60s, I remember as a kid sleeping over at friends' houses, we'd always stay up late (well past the time our parents would approve) and listen to our 7-transistor radios through our pillows. And we'd tune in "faraway" radio stations, like WLS in Chicago. I still remember quite well hearing these exact jingles on the radio, and it's been over 40 years since they aired. This short jingle montage includes a few cuts from the "personality" package, as well as two of the greatest "weather" jingles of all time. I still get goose bumps hearing the "Radar Weather Eye" jingle. It's just so cool! :-)

WLS 89 Chicago - Larry Lujack - May 3 1971 Chicago’s 89 WLS had so many legendary personalities that grace the microphones there. Fred Winston, John Records Landecker, Tommy Edwards, Jeff Davis, and may others. But for many WLS fans, there was one name that was above all others. Super Jock, Uncle Lar. Yes, the one & only Larry Lujack. Moving from Seattele’s KJR in 1967, Larry landed an evening shift at WCFL Chicago, beginning a relationship with the midwest that would last for decades! Larry crusty & cantankerousness, and the listeners loved it! Lujack influenced many present-day radio personalities, like Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern. Larry bounced back & forth between WCFL & WLS, until 1976, when he made WLS his home. He spent many years waking Chicago every morning, until 1987 when he moved to New Mexico. After 2000, Uncle Lar returned to the airwaves for a few years on WRLL. Larry Lujack was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2004. He was one of a kind. She was the First Lady of Chicago Radio, with a powerful voice that boomed throughout much of the U.S. and Canada via the clear channel signal of Chicago's WLS. She was also a pioneer, she was a woman on the air at a major top 40 radio station when it was extremely rare. And there was another barrier to break - she was African-American. Yvonne Daniels rose above it all to become of the legendary deejays of the Top 40 era, making her fame at the Big 89. She was there in the overnight slot from 1973 to 1982 as the first female jock on WLS and the first to work full-time on Chicago AM radio.

Aircheck recordered at 1 a.m. (Eastern time) in Philadelphia on New Year's morning: During WLS Chicago's lifetime as a Top 40 giant, their various production wizards assembled an annual year-end montage of hooks from all the number one hits of the year. Every year, the new montage was spliced on to the end of all the old ones, and the whole thing was played on WLS after the stroke of midnight to ring in the new. This one, broadcast on January 1, 1985, covers the time span of 1955 to 1984. Unfortunately, my aircheck of it ends just before it finished, as it reached the end of the cassette tape. Note: I have posted this before. This has been remastered from the original cassette with speed correction and re-uploaded in HD.

Here in Part 3, the Rewind special continued with the antics of Fred Winston, 9-12. What an amazing talent! Fred Winston is just as witty here as ever. Listen as he interacts with Lyle Dean. You'll even hear them do "Choose Your News", a cool take on one of the day's interesting stories. Catherine Johns does the first newscast of the day, Lyle Dean does the rest. Les Grobstein is here, as he is in Part 1. Not being from Chicago and not having been blessed with hearing Grobstein on a daily basis, I have reached the conclusion that Les Grobstein didn't especially get along with many of the WLS staffers during the MusicRadio years. Although, Grobstein and Fred Winston seem to get along pretty well. This is a FUN Aircheck, and as the first two, all the music has been scoped out because of copyright issues. His contributions to music radio were so widely respected, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland saw fit to feature him in their radio exhibit. John has entertained radio audiences in Michigan (WOIA, WERX, WTRX, WILS), Philadelphia (WIBG), Chicago (WLS–multiple times, WLUP, G-106, WCKG, WJMK, & WGN), Toronto (CFTR) and Cleveland (Power 108). When he was working at WLS in the 1970s, John was named Billboard Magazine’s Radio Personality of the year. Landecker is the author of “Records Truly Is My Middle Name” (2013), and has released six CDs of his work; “Landecker & The Legends” (’94), “Landecker & The Legends, Volume 2″ (’95), “Baby Boomers” (’96), “Live Long & Perspire” (’97), “Landecker & The Legends, Volume 5″ (’98), and “20th Century Hits and Bits” (’99). Here's John Landecker and all his night time craziness on WLS radio in Chicago. From April of 1976.
WLS Cassette Airchecks #1 - 1975 Montage, December 31, 1975 From 1970 through the late 1970s I did not have the money to buy much music, but I could afford to buy blank cassettes. So the radio was my source for music. But rather than "clean" versions of the songs, I got all this other stuff, the jingles and the DJs talking and sometimes humorous commercials. For years I kept these treasured cassettes, and listened to them repeatedly. Eventually I digitized them, so I could listen to them on my computer, and then iPod, and now iPhone. And then with the Internet, I found that others had done similar things. They had actually done a better job - they had just put in a tape and recorded entire hours of content, what are more properly called airchecks (at least more a correct name than mine). But, despite that lack of "proper" format, I have a few things that I've not found online. This is one of them. This is the WLS Montage, recorded on Dec 31, 1975. That evening I got Jeff Davis' introduction to the top songs of 1975, a commercial for the "Sing it and Win" contest, a 7-Up commercial ("We See The Light of 7-Up"), and then the verbal countdown to 12 midnight, at which time the Montage was played. I am not sure, but this may be the first time it was played on WLS. In any case, I believe this is the oldest version of this I've found online. Enjoy, and share with your friends!
